Acanthus Leaves Pillow or chair seat
Gold
Acanthus Leaves, Pillow or Chair Seat
Gold Version
Acanthus leaves are almost a trademark of Morris’ designs and here he devotes the entire area to this most adaptable plant. The complexity of this dense, layered, subtly shaded wallpaper required 30 printing blocks and 15 colours, causing each roll to cost 16 shillings (80p sterling) - rather expensive in 1875 ! The original watercolour design is in the V & A, London.
This design can fit naturally into a chair seat. If necessary the corner leaves may be omitted to accommodate the back struts or front legs.
CANVAS: 12#/in (5#cm) Zweigart White de luxe, 22x26". DESIGN: 16½x19½" (42x49cm) WOOLS: Appleton tapestry, 22 Colours. STITCH: Tent stitch worked with one thread.

Acanthus Bellpull
Acanthus Bellpull
The Acanthus plant is found in the decoration of many ancient cultures; Morris used it extensively. His original silk wall-hanging which inspired these kits (now at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London) was designed by Morris in about 1880. Beth Russell has interpreted the hanging into a needlepoint rug, cushion and bellpull. To achieve the closest match to the blue of the original, she has blended two shades.CANVAS: 7/8#/in Zweigart Cream Rug Canvas, 44x14" (112x35.5cm). DESIGN: 38x6½" (96.5x16.5cm). STITCH: Cross.
