Acanthus Leaves Pillow or chair seat
Gold
Acanthus Leaves, Pillow or Chair Seat
Gold Version
Acanthus leaves are almost a trademark of Morris’ designs and here he devotes the entire area to this most adaptable plant. The complexity of this dense, layered, subtly shaded wallpaper required 30 printing blocks and 15 colours, causing each roll to cost 16 shillings (80p sterling) - rather expensive in 1875 ! The original watercolour design is in the V & A, London.
This design can fit naturally into a chair seat. If necessary the corner leaves may be omitted to accommodate the back struts or front legs.

Acanthus Bellpull
The Acanthus plant is found in the decoration of many ancient cultures; Morris used it extensively. His original silk wall-hanging which inspired these kits (now at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London) was designed by Morris in about 1880. Beth Russell has interpreted the hanging into a needlepoint rug, cushion and bellpull. African Marigold Pillow
Designed by William Morris in 1876 as a cotton chintz, African Marigold was block-printed by Thomas Wardle using natural Prussian blue dye. This interpretation for needlepoint recaptures the faded look of Morris's preliminary watercolour sketch which is in the collection of the William Morris Gallery at Walthamstow.
Beth Russell took the centre of the lovely watercolour for the cushion and later the whole painting was slightly adapted to turn it from a repeating pattern to an almost symmetrical rug, with a leaf border added.

Artichoke 1
Artichoke 1
This superb design was originally produced by William Morris as an embroidery kit. It could be purchased as an outline on fabric with some of the stitching partially done if required. Working with wool on linen, one of Morris' clients embroidered eight full size wall-hangings in crewel work; some of these may be seen at the William Morris Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The same design worked in silk may be seen at Standen, East Grinstead.
Beth Russell has adapted three parts of Morris' Artichoke for needlepoint. Each is beautifully printed on strong polished de luxe canvas which is large enough to be made into cushions or chair seats.
Sufficient wool is included in each needlepoint kit to stitch an area approximately 14½x16" (37x40.5cm).

Compton Rug
Morris & Co produced the beautiful Compton design in 1896, as part of the furnishings for Compton Hall, Wolverhampton. Although it was designed by his colleague Henry Dearle, it shows all the characteristics of William Morris himself, with rich colours, exotic flowers and meandering leaves. Wallpapers and fabrics featuring the Compton design are still produced by Arthur Sanderson & Sons of London - the perfect way to complete your decorative scheme.

Fox Pillow or Picture
William Morris The Forest
This remarkable William Morris tapestry was originally designed for his patron Alexander Ionides. Completed in 1887, it measured 15ft (4.5m) wide. Morris delegated the drawing of the animals to the architect Philip Webb and the foreground millefleurs to his eventual successor Henry Dearle. The result is a tribute to their lifelong friendship and various talents. It is interesting to compare the Greenery tapestry designed later entirely by Henry Dearle. The original Forest is owned by the Victoria & Albert Museum.
The tapestry has been adapted so that each part of the design is complete in itself, however the Hare, Fox and Raven look marvellous sewn together to make a modern day version of the famous wall hanging.

Greenery Deer
Greenery Deer
Fire-screen, picture or wall hanging.
Henry Dearle, Morris' first weaving apprentice, became a talented designer in his own right and on William Morris' death in 1896 he took over Morris & Co. So close was he to Morris in style that many of his designs for wallpapers and fabrics have been mistaken for Morris' own. However, it was in tapestry that he revealed his greatest talent and here his work is quite distinctive. Greenery is one of his finest works and it is interesting to compare it with Morris' Forest.
The original Greenery tapestry, completed in 1892, is now on loan to the National Trust of Scotland and is hung at Crathes Castle, Banchory. A second weaving was completed in 1915 and is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. Beth Russell has adapted the very large weaving into needlepoint and divided it into parts, which she has named for convenience. Each of these would make a hansome firescreen or wall hanging. Sewn together the entire scene is magnificent.

Beautifully painted scenes from Æsop's 2500 year old fables adorn the walls of the spectacular octagonal drawing room in Castell Coch, a Victorian fantasy castle in South Wales. Owned by CADW (Welsh Historical Monuments), it is open to the public and well worth a visit.

Holland Park Rug
Alexander Ionides was one of Morris' most important patrons (see The Forest). He owned a magnificent house in Holland Park, London. In the late 1800s he commissioned Morris to produce a large hand-tufted carpet for his home. The design was called Carbrook and the original now rests with the Victoria & Albert Museum. Beth Russell, while retaining all the beautiful detail, has reduced the design to more manageable proportions and re-named it Holland Park.

William Morris designed and printed his "Fruit" or "Pomegranate" wallpaper in 1862 at Red Lion Square in London. Lemons, oranges, peaches and pomegranates would all have been seen in the conservatories of the larger Victorian houses and Rossetti painted many famous portraits of Morris' wife Janey holding a pomegranate.
Beth Russell has produced four charming needlepoint kits based on the William Morris wallpaper design. They make ideal projects for beginners or to take on holiday. Their size can make small cushions, perfect for the small of our troublesome backs - or may be inserted onto larger cushions - or mounted side by side in a bolster-shaped pillow.

Lion
Lion Pillow, Picture or Wall Hanging
Willam Morris The Forest
This remarkable William Morris tapestry was originally designed for his patron Alexander Ionides. Completed in 1887, it measured 15ft (4.5m) wide. Morris delegated the drawing of the animals to the architect Philip Webb and the foreground millefleurs to his eventual successor Henry Dearle. The result is a tribute to their lifelong friendship and various talents. It is interesting to compare the Greenery tapestry designed later entirely by Henry Dearle. The original Forest is owned by the Victoria & Albert Museum. William Morris The Forest This remarkable William Morris tapestry was originally designed for his patron Alexander Ionides. Hare Fox Raven Lion Peacock The tapestry has been adapted so that each part of the design is complete in itself, however the Hare, Fox and Raven look marvellous sewn together to make a modern day version of the famous wall hanging. The Peacock is a perfect size for a firescreen. The Lion fits the stool shown with the Borders or can be made into a comfortable fireside cushion.

A leading figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement, De Morgan was talented in many fields, particularly stained glass and pottery. Most of these needlepoint designs have been taken from a wide selection of six-inch ceramic tiles that he made in his workshop in Chelsea in the 1870s. He later moved closer to Morris at Merton Abbey in Surrey. De Morgan’s tiles and highly glazed pottery are now in the collections of museums all over the world.
